Rubbish Dump Community
(via Samaritan’s Purse)
The rubbish dump of Addis Ababa is called Koshe, meaning “dirty” in Amharic. The entire area is polluted, unprotected, and emanates an awful smell. Sadly, the landfill is home to hundreds of people who survive in extreme poverty as scavengers, selling materials they recover from the waste. Children, youth, and women primarily inhabit the squalid settlements around the dump and have poor access to food, shelter, potable water, and hygiene and sanitation facilities. The residents also have health problems from consuming cabbages grown in the filthy soil.
The needs are immense for this neglected population living in
squalor. However, we see an opportunity to serve 2,100 children, youth, and women who are in crisis and live around this landfill.
Samaritan’s Purse will collaborate with local churches and empower them to work together as they meet the physical and spiritual needs of a community disregarded by society.
